Using concept art released on Twitter and info from an interview, I created a sound concept for Playdead's third title. It comes in the form of a short story using a spaceship AI and its pilot, setting down in one of the tunnels.
From the colours I wanted to create an aggressive and thick experience where everything sounds gritty, heavy, worn and crisp. From the image it could either be very bright outside due to a scorching sun or it could be an arctic environment. I chose something inbetween or where that detail didn’t really matter so it all takes place in the opening area of a tunnel. In my head I heard an abandoned excavation site, wind howling down the tunnel, shuttering derelict equipment and being a fan of the Hyperion Cantos and Star Wars I wanted a spaceship right in the middle.
When you don’t have visual capture, you have to pan everything wider in order to create clarity and establish a mental geography. The ambiance is thick with drones that modulate and gives the site an eerie feel and a sense of scale. The image shows a lot of depth so I wanted to create a lot of layers in order to make the Pilot’s z-movement and distance more discernable. At the same time I was careful with making events and movement too complex at the danger of loosing the listener and washing everything together.
I wanted a short and intense experience so things might be a bit fast paced considering what transpires, hopefully parts of it will make sense.
